Here are some photos of me rescuing a neighbor.
He forgot to set the parking brake and his truck rolled off this edge. It is hard to see in this photo but his rear leaf spring would dig into the wall if I just pulled him straight. In the photo below, you can see the green utility box that kept him from going further off the wall.
And you wonder why your utility bill goes up each month... Below is the Hummer coming to the rescue.

As they saw me arrive home in the Hummer, they immediately moved their Land Rover out of the way and asked if I could help. Luckily I just bought some large chains and tow straps just for this sort of thing on Friday. Well, ok, maybe I didn't plan on getting to use this stuff this close to home but I got lucky! I had the kid hook the chain onto his truck and I spooled out about 40 foot of winch cable. The problem was that the rear leaf spring was off the edge...if I just pulled him forward I would move the retaining wall and a good portion of Colorado along with it...I thought that'd be kinda cool but the kid didn't agree. The spring was only a few inches away from the wall and it would be the first to hit...well before the tire. If it were only halfway down, it would have probably rolled up but that was not the case. I suggested that we jack up the back so that the spring would clear and they agreed. One of his friends had a bottle jack so he jacked it up a little bit. I let him borrow my high-lift jack and he was able to put it inside the fender and hook it on the frame. Before he started jacking, I tightened up the winch a little more that way the only way the truck would fall further backwards would be if it took the Hummer with it. Once he had it up higher with the high-lift jack, he repositioned the bottle jack and got it up where it needed to be to clear the ledge. We then put a bundle of firewood on end under the back tire and I kicked the winch into gear. It pulled him up without a problem. His rear spring is bent up some but his dad said that the truck seemed to drive straight. With a kid like that I'm sure his dad is a good source of sound judgment. |
